Disability, retirement and Medicare after 65

Once you reach full retirement age, Social Security disability benefits convert to retirement benefits automatically. That changes which questions are worth asking.

If you are already over full retirement age

Applying for disability generally stops being the relevant route, because the two benefits convert into one another at that point and the disability amount is not higher. The useful questions become about Medicare coverage, about whether a spouse or dependent may be entitled to something, and about any benefit you have not claimed.

If you are thinking about early retirement at 62

This is worth pausing on. Taking retirement benefits before full retirement age permanently reduces the monthly amount — for the rest of your life, not just until you reach full retirement age.

If the reason you are considering it is that your health has made work impossible, disability benefits are worth understanding first, because they pay at the full rate rather than the reduced one.

Medicare

Medicare eligibility normally begins at 65. People who have received SSDI for a qualifying period become eligible earlier, regardless of age — one of the more significant practical differences between the two programs.

Benefits for a spouse or family

A spouse, and in some cases minor or disabled adult children, may be entitled to benefits based on your record. Families frequently do not realise this and never ask. There are caps on the total a family can receive, but it is worth finding out where you stand.
